Helping to cap off a full weekend of culinary happenings in fine fashion will be internationally renown jazz artist Marcus Shelby. An accomplished teacher, composer, arranger, bassist, and San Francisco resident, Shelby is the 1991 winner of the Charles Mingus Scholarship and studied with composer James Newton and legendary bassist Charlie Haden. From 1990-1996, Shelby led bands at Columbia Records and GRP Impulse! Recording Artists Black/Note. Shelby serves as the Artistic Director and leader of The Marcus Shelby Orchestra, The Marcus Shelby Hot 7, and The Marcus Shelby Trio. Mr. Shelby demonstrates his commitment to developing new musicians through his work in music education at Rooftop Alternative School in San Francisco, and the Stanford Jazz Workshop at Stanford University.
