Jazz historian and raconteur Mark Cantor celebrates jazz performed by smaller combos—trios through sextets—and compares styles from the East and West Coasts, as well as Chicago and Kansas City. Artists featured on screen are Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers; the Horace Silver Sextet; Shelly Manne & His Men; the Lighthouse All Stars; the Thelonious Monk Quartet; Turk Murphy Jazz Band and many others.
